Since the beginning of October, Councilwoman Dr. Judith Green (D-1) has been carrying a very important document to school students in her district. It is the document that set the tone for the creation of government in the United State s of America.

“The US Constitution is one of the many guidelines that have defined who we are as a nation,” says Green. “It is very important that student understand and appreciate the impact the Constitution has on our lives.”

Beginning with Carter Elementary, Green has been delivering pocket size copies of the Constitution to District 1 fifth graders, and challenging students to learn to recite the Preamble and the seven Articles of the Constitution. She has also visited Foster Academy, Crums Lane Elementary, Wellington Elementary, Byck Elementary, and she will then go on to Kennedy Elementary. She would like to talk to the Middle School students in District 1 before Election Day, if time permits.

“My purpose is to talk with students about the U. S. Constitution and give them a sense of how the federal government and its elected officials, state government and its elected officials, and finally local elected officials like the Metro Council work within a set of guidelines to serve the people who elected us to serve,” says Green.

The U.S. Constitution, drafted in 1787, was premised on the idea of a government that would do the most good, for the most people, most of the time—knowing that it cannot always please everybody. The study of the Constitution is part of the core content curriculum covered on the CATS test for 5th Graders.

“But more importantly, I can think of no other document or set of rules that define the civic responsibilities that these students will someday be called upon to exercise,” says Green. “We must do all we can to make sure they understand the role of the government as well as, its citizens.”
